I’m very new to fly fishing. I took a class on it and caught my first fish yesterday. (I’ll include a picture) so far I’ve been using the rods they have but I would like to get my own. I’ve fished with other types of rods and reels but in flyfishing it seems the does not matter as much as it would when getting something like a bait caster. So what is important? Where should my budget for? Pole or line?

Also if there is a thread going over this please let me know, I looked but didn’t see anything

  1. If it’s creek fishing 4-5wt options are great, river fishing you’ll want a 5-6wt and lake fishing I recommend either a 7-8wt

My personal favorite is a 6wt for bass but my local river has some toads in it so it’s nice to have the extra backbone for big fish, or the bigger flies in throwing at them.

If you live in a place that’s windy I recommend a somewhat heavier wt rod too.

Get nice LINE the reel doesn’t need to be fancy. Rods can get pricey but you don’t need to break the bank on one plenty of great ones you can find on FB marketplace that will be discounted prices. Hopefully. Best of luck my guy

  2. Line then rod then reel. Gear does not equal skill, although all the marketing is pressuring you to buy more and better gear.

Get a decent setup, learn to use it for a thousand hours, then worry about “upgrades”.
