My husband got me a 110gal fish tank. This is by far the biggest tank I will own. I use a canister filter on my 40gal, but its a Amazon brand. I dont know if I should trust that brand with a 110g. Pic of my fish room. ( the tank is not staying on that hutch. We need to build a stand.

My eheim canister filter is an absolute dream. My LFS has all the spare parts in case anything breaks and you can swap out the included filter media if you want. I added Purigen and filter floss to mine. Can’t speak to other brands, but I’m happy it’s my eheim
Im running a fluval fx2 on my 200l arm and while overkill. It is pretty damn good
I built my own canister filter in a 5 gallon bucket. Just need a water pump, hoses/pvc, ceramic rings, sponges with different coarseness and filter floss. Works like a charm
There a noticeable difference in water clarity, add a wave maker to enhance them
I’ve used a few different types over the decades. My latest two brands are Penn Plax Cascades. I have two of those. They are great. Relatively inexpensive. Easy to use and maintain.
I also have two Fluvals. And FX 4 and an FX 6. Those are both absolute monsters. They work so well and do such a good job. I stopped buying any of their branded stuff though and instead buy third party sponges and materials. So much cheaper.
Not sure if the fluval 407 would “underfilter” for this tank, but depending on how the tank it stocked its a pretty solid canister filter. I have one of the smaller fluval canister filters and maintenance is easy. I’ve also ran their FX line in the past with no issues. They are solid filters in my opinion.
I have a few Oase canister filters on different tanks. Definitely a game changer. The amount of space for extra media is great, before I got them I was always a HOB kinda girl. Ill never go back😂
I like my Vevor brand much cheaper than the others and has worked great on my two discus tanks. I prefer the one that has a UV filter too!
I’ve had an eheim classic on a 120g for about 5 yrs. Easy peasy maintenance and does what two aquaclear 110s were doing but quieter.
I love them, especially with the integrated heater from Oase.
Fluval is great because of how easy it is to get replacing parts like gaskets and impellers
I was a die-hard Eheim fan, and ran a 2215 for a good 20 years, but parts are getting hard to find and my LFS isn’t able to source them anymore.
I now have an Oase biomaster, and jt seems solid. I really like the ability to pull out the pre-filter without touching the rest of the media.
I use a fluval 207 on a smaller (40gal) tank and it’s lovely. Quiet too. Good idea to use a spray bar if stocking fish that don’t like flow or for extra surface agitation – if not using a spray bar be sure to point the outflow up a bit towards the surface to make ripples so everything stays nice and oxygenated.
Only drawback so far is if you knock the pipes loose accidentally or something leaks, it makes a big mess cause the filter is outside of the tank. But that can mostly be avoided with some extra attention to make sure everything’s attached securely.
I run an fx6 with all bio filtration and an fx4 with all water polishing filtration on my 125 gallon. A lot of it comes down to what you plan on stocking
I have that same 110g.
60% planted.
I have 20 corys, 35 lemon tetras, 6 Angelfish, 10 huge siamese algae eaters. They all breed regularly and like 2 babies reach adulthood
I use 2 sponge filters and a circulation pump.
I also had a giant cannister fx6 but it died and i didn’t notice for months and the tank was fine so i never replaced it. 5 years later, still great.
Also hope you are tall. Reaching into a 30 inch tall tank to move plants is a nightmare. I literally haven’t replanted anything in a decade so it’s been phases of one plant then another taking over.
I will never have a tank deeper than 24 inches again
I’m running an Eheim Classic 2215 on my 55 gallon.
Don’t know what their lineup is for your size but Eheim is a good brand. I’ve been using them for decades and nothing ever failed.
If anything does fail, all parts are readily available online.
You got a Filter Sump Aquarium when you do it in the big one …. no one said a filter sump didnt have a light and Shrimps in it 😊
Maintaining canisters is a big turn off for me.
I ran 2 per 55 gal and 2 aquaclear hob.
Ehiem for canisters no doubt. That said, if someone has an easier canister to clean, then I’d look into that for sure.
I’ve been using Fluval canister filters for years and love them. I have an fx6 on my 75 gallon tank, but it’s excessive for that size because it’s an overstocked cichlid tank. They’re easy maintenance and create water flow too. Not sure what you’re putting in the tank but if you need wave makers and/or surface tension, the canister filter flow can help with that.
Fluval FX6
You could run two filters to ensure full coverage.
Two Fluval 307s would be perfect.
I was running a pair of the sun sun canister filters off Amazon. Both started leaking due to bad design.
Personally, I’m currently running Cascade Max flows on 160 gallon. They move a large amount of water, probably a bit more than an fx6 but they are huge and unwieldy and I don’t think they will fit inside the stand you have from the looks of it.
If noise is a factor for you, one of my other tanks currently has a Cascade Pro series II. It is probably the quietest canister filter I’ve ever owned. And I’ve owned probably every brand that’s currently on the market and some that are no longer sold.
However, The flow rate on it isn’t all that impressive so you would want to get a pair of them for a 110g imo.
As a middle of the road option, I’ve also got one of the newer aqueon canister filters. Pushes quite a bit of water and it’s got a dual option return setup I really like.
You can set it up either with a spray bar or just a jet nozzle and you also have the option of swapping that out for what is essentially to hang on back filter returns that just push out a gentle stream of water across the surface.
I’ve run eheim’s and their solid filters, but they’re somewhat expensive for what you get imo.
I’ve run a few different models of fluval over the years and was never very impressed with their lifespan or performance.
Just somewhat depends on your budget and what you value most in a filter as far as what route you go with.
The tank near that door scares me lol
I ran Aquatop on my 75 gallon saltwater for a decade without issues. Both lasted about 5 years and at the time were cheap crap. Now they are expensive.
Now I found out about a Polish brand Aqua El that has better specs than Fluval FX6 for less than half the price. By far the quietest filter I’ve run in over 30 years of aquariums. Super easy to clean.
