We will probably be fishing for Largemouth Bass and there are Blue channel and Flathead Catfish around too in the area I plan on taking him to. Doing a log cabin stay. I would just like some advice, I will be also doing research but I want to learn from others as well. Most of my family is no stranger to saltwater fishing but as this is freshwater Im at a loss. Are 6ft poles good? I found these on Amazon (Photo below). Also I see there are alot of different options for baits and if I dont use live is it a good idea to get some kind of blood bait or bait scent? Im at a loss on jigs vs chatter vs spinner vs plastics, what have you seen the most action with? Thank you for your time!

Hey! A 6 pole MLF would be an awesome starter rod. I’d pair with 10lb braid and a floro leader. I would suggest a spinning rod and reel combo like what you have posted on top. But some 1/4 jig heads ( I like northland tackle) and a bag of white mister twisters and you can catch about anything. I’d also suggest a couple bobbers/ split shot/ bare hooks. Simple set up and you could get all of that for under $70. Don’t splurge or go too expensive starting out!

when I was 13, I used a 4’6 Shakespeare rod to catch smallmouth. I’ve changed s few times and use a 6′. most 6′ and other sizes around 6′ are good for most fish, but because you have a baitcaster, I would recommend watching a few tutorials beforehand.

I’d get him either a spinner like the first one or a basic push button reel. That bait caster can become an instant nightmare in one cast and be discouraging to start out on. A 5-6 foot pole is fine for what you’re fishing for.

Get a variety of soft plastic worms and some offset worm hooks. Rig them weedless and just throw them out, twitch the rod back 2 or 3 times, reel in the slack, wait a few seconds for it to drop, repeat. That’s, in my opinion, the best way to fish for bass in unfamiliar areas without snags and a likely hood of catching one.

Get some half ounce sinkers and smallish circle hooks for catfishing. Buy some shrimp or cut bait, and just throw it out and fish on the bottom. Could also use worms.

You could also get live bait when you get there, and fish shiners or crickets under a bobber. Pretty much anything will bite on it.
