I bought a new reel, Daiwa Regal 2500, I spooled it twice to make sure I spooled correctly and both times shortly after I begin casting these massive tangles happen UNDER the reel. I've tried adjusting my drag, putting less spool, and more spool to no avail. After spending 20 minutes learning the uni knot because of previously losing 2 of the 3 lures I bought, the tangles lost me my last dang lure I bought. The picture attached is after me cutting it was way worse than this. Anyone know why this is happening?

unless the line is really old you’ve gotta be doing something wrong or the reel is fucked. got a pic of it spooled up and on the rod?
When does this happen? When you’re reeling in line? Does the line unwind as soon as you open your bail? Reeling the wrong way? Due to unlocked anti reverse switch?
Take a look at how the line is laying on the spool. If you’re getting large amounts on top, bottom, or even outside of the spool area you need to adjust the number of shims on the main shaft. I’ve seen this often when the line isn’t laying right because the spool is too high or too low due to too many or too few shims.
The other times is due to not keeping tension on the line while reeling in slack.
K… it ain’t rocket science but mistakes can be made.
1) you’re new. Understand mono is easier to deal with than stiff fluoro. Easier to deal with than braid (here come the experts to tell me I’m full of shit). So start with mono.
2) the line MUST come off the spool from one spool onto the other correctly or you SHALL (like in the 15…I mean 10 Commandments) induce twist, a bad thing. (Point your two pointer fingers at each other, start making circles with both going the same direction. Imagine your line leaving one spool and going onto the other the same way.)
3) put line on with some tension and don’t overfill. You can fish with an underfilled spool while your buddy is fighting an overfilled spool.
4) Lift the rod tip on the beginning of the retrieve to take up the slack. Slack isn’t your buddy.
5) some lures will eventually cause line twist. If you stream fish and its a deep enough stream, cut everything off, slowly strip line off and allow it to go down stream, hold and pause occasionally. Then slowly reel back in. The water drag will 1) untwist the line and 2) provide the tension required.
When you get your Bass Tracker you can troll the line, sans lure or terminal tackle, behind the boat at slow speed and accomplish the same thing.
Hang tight for experts to come and tell you better stuff.
don’t reel on slack line
