Im looking to buy my first rod. I want one I can take lake fishing and pier fishing. Is this a good rod?

I bought that same combo recently from Costco. I’m pretty happy with it. I looked up the models and they are the same as gx2. The casting rod is pretty cool, I plan on tossing on a bait caster reel on it. Can’t ever go wrong with ugly stick.

  2. Is there a reason you want 2 rods / reels? I’d not suggest this kit for an adult because I don’t think a spincast reel is needed. I’d just buy a single spinning reel combo.

Ugly Stick as a brand is fine, I just don’t care for this package.

Where are you located? What fish are you targeting?

Ugly Stik makes excellent rods, I have caught more 20+ pound salmon on my ugly stiks than any “premium brand.”

The reels that come with these combos are low quality, arguably they are the more important part.

You may be better off going to a local fishing store and purchasing a rod and reel separate, the lures in these kits are often useless.

If you are new to fishing and are comfortable spending $100 bucks then go for it. I would wait for them to go on sale myself.

  4. A bit heavy for my tastes, but I like fishing for trout. If you’re into bass, then hell yeah!

This looks like it was designed for a beginner parent (spinning combo) and their kid (spin cast combo). Not a bad deal for that purpose, but if you’re just shopping for yourself, there are many alternatives. Ugly stick rods are okay, in that they don’t break easily. The reels suck. But if you’re just getting started, no need to get the best out there. Certainly includes all you need to catch some fish in your local pond.

Spin casters aren’t my favorite, I’d probably just get the spinning combo, or rod and reel separately and tackle specific to what I was fish for. Ugly Stik rods aren’t the most sensitive but they are durable I have several that 15+ years old.

First question you should is what are you going to fish for and where? This would not work well on a small creek with lots of brush overhanging and fishing for trout. That situation takes a short lightweight rod and smaller reel.

Think of the places you are more likely to fish and what you would like to catch. I can see this working on a lake for bass or crappie. But trout bites are usually softer and if they feel resistance, they will let go before hook sets. This pole won’t bend as easy so you won’t see these softer bites easily. If you are interested in what is good for trout, let me know. I can recommend some gear.

  8. I have had my 5’6″ Ugly Stik for 30 years. Solid choice for bass, trout, etc. I even did some surf and pier fishing with it.

I would suggest only one rod.
