I’m new to bass fishing, and today was my first time catching a bass with a flopper popper. I hooked the bass in the mouth, but I assume that while the fish was fighting in the water, or when I brought it up to the bank, the second treble hook got stuck in its under belly area. It seems that a treble hook getting stuck on the fish’s body is really easy, specially when bringing it to the bank. How can I prevent this in the future when using treble hooks?
I didn’t want to rip the bass skin, so I cut off my hook and left it in the fish, it swam away but I know it most likely died. Also, I didn’t realize that the hook was stuck on its body when I took the picture.

Very carefully, and always carry pliers.
It takes a little time but you can unhook these trebles. Even if it cuts the fish a little bit that’s better than leaving it in
I consider myself an intermediate fisherman at this point and let me tell you, I fucking hate treble hooks. They get stuck on everything, my hands, clothes and fish included.
I actually have spent the last few nights swapping out all my treble hooks with single hooks
This is very normal with double treble baits and you can’t prevent it from happening. What you can do is get some pliers and pinch down all the barbs on your hooks so it’s a lot easier to get them out without causing extra damage to the fish.
Pliers are def key, as already stated, but you don’t have to do a typical hard set like with other hooks. Hell, they seem to hook themselves with trebles. Keep pressure and you should be set.
Treble hooks are tricky for this reason exactly. Great at getting a hook set, but can be troublesome. Lots of people will swap them for single hooks, I believe siwash hooks but I never have. What helps me is crushing the barb with a pair of pliers, they flatten pretty easy. This doesn’t change the odds of this happening, but it makes getting them unhooked much quicker and less traumatic to the fish. Just keep tension on the line so they don’t come off!
When your on the water and want a quick answer, I use Fishfinderengine.com to help selecting baits based off species… as for the specific use for that specific hook you definitely asked the right crowd for input. Just giving you another resource if you were looking for it.
