A friend of mine recently had their father in law pass away. He was a flyfisherman for the last 80 years or so. My friend said he'd have liked it if his fishing kit went on to be used – so I got it.
I've been left 8 rods, spanning a lifetime of fishing in how old they are (I've ID'd the more modern ones). He fished the River Tay in Scotland a lot and most rods are various weight Salmon rods – which I can put to good use on the Spey myself.
There is also this Hardy Split Cane rod that I've worked out if farily modern, from the mid 70's. But I can't work out what the model is, or how I am ment to pair a line with it. What weight line goes on there? I have never used a split cane before. Any general advice on that would be greatly appreciated – do's and dont's?
Before anyone sais it – I've been given these to fish, not to hang on the wall. And that is what I will do. Unless I find out this is some sort of rarity. But my research doesn't suggest it is.
He also left a TON of flies, boxes, other tackle, nets, reels (nice salmon reels, but none that'd go well on the Hardy) and like 20 fly lines.
I am incredible grateful for this gift. I am well situated to make proper use of it, now to cross my fingers for a good season ahead

One, glad you are going to fish it. I don’t like rods just being used as collectibles, their function is their beauty.
Anyway, it’s a Hardy Palakona. I can’t read what it says under Palakona though, Regal something ? What’s the overall length? It looks like it’s in really good shape, both tips are the same length so probably hasn’t been repaired.
The identification forum over at [classicflyrodforum.com](http://classicflyrodforum.com) is your best friend here, someone over there will know exactly what this is and what line weight it is. Spinoza has a bunch of Hardys up for sale too, you might look through there to see if you can match it [https://www.spinozarods.com/collections/hardy-bamboo-fly-rods](https://www.spinozarods.com/collections/hardy-bamboo-fly-rods)
If you figure out what the old rating is, here’s a conversion chart [https://www.bamboorodmaking.com/LineConversions.html](https://www.bamboorodmaking.com/LineConversions.html)
