I was gifted this sand waterfall tank at Christmas and it's been running great ever since, except I'm afraid to put animals in it.

I had a couple ramshorn in there but they got sucked into the waterfall. I don't want to be an animal killing machine.

I am worried about putting shrimp or anything else in here. I think anything that gets near the sand will be sucked in, right? Does anyone have one of these with animals or is it best to keep it just a planted tank?

  1. I don’t have anything to contribute but dang, whoever gifted you that must love you. I’m jealous!

  2. How many gallons is that tank? (How much swimmable space) It’s very cool looking. Can you put a plastic screen over any dangerous parts?

I haven’t had one of these but I’ve wanted one. Does it use a pump or an airstone to run the sand through? If it’s an airstone than anything sucked in SHOULD be just fine unless there is a screen of some kind that would block anything bigger than sand. If it’s a pump than they have to pass through mechanical parts and that may be bad for anything bigger than cherry shrimp. I find my shrimp living inside my filter every time i clean it out. There are a few videos on youtube of how these are made that can give you an idea of how the flow works. Have the ramshorns completely disappeared or did the sand flow change after they were sucked in?
