I inherited my boyfriend's Betta named Yoda after he passed away in February from a massive heart attack π π now Yoda has been with me a little over a month and he stays inside his log. He very little comes out of it. I try talking to him and I even played a recording of Brian (my boyfriend that passed) talking and nothing seems to help Yoda. Does anyone have any suggestions? I just hate seeing him act so unhappy.

I’m sorry sorry to hear of your boyfriend’s passing. I also understand how it might be difficult for Yoda too sometimes they take sometime to adapt to changes like a new place, new voice, lighting etc. Bettas as usually curious in nature.
You can try a few things hopefully to cheer him up. You can get him live feed like worms or baby brine shrimp and feed it to him or you can get him some betta toys like a mirror or a hammock.
Also, try to make the spot you have put him in now as similar as you can to what he has been used to in terms of lighting hours etc and make sure his water changes, temperature etc are on point. Hopefully he will warm upto you sooner, don’t be too hard on yourself you seem to be a very kind and compassionate person to care for the little guy. When you do get a chance to see him try to see if his fins or scales have any indication of an infection/spots.
Hope this helps!

Here’s a quick rundown of betta care! I would start by removing the sharp, bright decor! It can really stress out a betta and leak chemicals into the water. Bettas and fish in general, love a very natural looking environment. Live plants will be your best friend and his!
I’m sorry about your boyfriend. π
As for the fish, have you checked the water parameters?
What’s the temperature? Ammonia level? What sort of filtration do you have?
Also, the decorations in there are not safe for him. Anything with spikes and plastic can tear his fins. The cholla log is a death trap. They can get stuck trying to get through the little openings.
Bettas need to be coming up to the surface for air. They have a lung-type breathing system called labyrinth. If they don’t come up, they will suffocate.
I would take all the plastic decorations out and add some real plants and driftwood. Maybe change the substrate to sand.
Also get him a hammock, look on Amazon for betta hammock. They attach to the tank wall close to the surface so he can relax on it.
Hi OP, are you testing the water and doing water changes?
