My paranoia would make me put it on the rack if able.

It will be perfectly fine…until it’s not. Breaking the keel by hitting a big bump at speed will ruin your day. You’ve got a lot of unsupported weight hanging over. Also, does your state not have a 4 foot overhang rule?

Serious question: what on earth is the appeal of a pickup truck with a 4 foot bed over an SUV or a van? Like do you often need to carry just three or four hay bales or like a quarter yard of topsoil?
