So we got here to Edisto Beach, SC 3 days ago. My daughter & 2 of her friends are on Spring Break. Wife is reading her books, and I’m surf fishing as usual. The girls have gotten too much sun, shopped too much, had a day in Charleston, etc. Meanwhile I’ve been picking at the whiting & black drum. The surf has calmed a bit today so I wanted to try a new approach on the incoming tide this evening – downsizing to 10lb fluorocarbon hi lo rigs with #1 circle hooks and a 2oz sinker. Still using fresh shrimp.
So I made my first cast up close against one of the jetties. Using my 7ft St Croix Mojo Surf rod with a 4500 Penn Slammer 3 now. Lightened up the drag & stuck it in the surf fishing cart. Sat my butt down & who comes up behind me with her chair – my daughter who I’ve barely seen since we left 😁👍🏻 Not 2 min later got a nice bump then a beautiful bend in that rod & the sound of line being peeled off. She sees it immediately and I actually have to tell her TWICE to grab it. After a nice tussle she landed her first puppy drum in the surf – very proud papa moment. 10 min later she was gathering shells – I guess she just had to show me how it’s done & walk away 😂
