Bottom would be my choice

Bottom but if really want to have fun, get a weedless one or top water. There is less chance of getting snagged. Topwater offers a visual aspect so instead of being bummed about no bites, seeing how the lure acts can be fun.

Soft body only has one hook to deal with. Trying to unhook two trebles could be really frustrating for a new fisherman

I agree with bottom given choice between the two. My top choice, if they’re old enough to fish the two pictured, would be a top water bait all the way. Age dependent on particular baits. With young ones you can’t beat a hook tipped with live worm or minnow and a floater. They tend to get bored easily and aren’t interested or lose interest altogether. Either way show them the right way and they’ll never forget it. Good luck and happy fishing!!
