I don’t want to use clove oil on a labyrinth fish. She if suffering from severe dropsy. I am squeamish about hitting her head but I can if I need to. Only problem is she’s the biggest betta I’ve seen she’s no pin head so I feel it will bother me a lot. Penny has lived in this 75 gallon her whole life with a few small community fish. I have art of her throughout the house. She was my favorite fish. I noticed she’s a pinecone this morning. She has been in no contact with any new fish. I moved her to my well established 20 gallon as an only fish since she had a rather large tumor last week to monitor her swimming ability. pine coning in a weeks time. I believe she’s had one of the best lives a betta could have and I don’t want her to die badly. I have delt with dropsy this bad before. No I don’t want to give her salt baths and prolong it for it to happen again. I believe this is old age and organ failure.

Only good news is her tank will be open for a new betta to enjoy. Trying to look on the bright side:(
She needs to be put down tonight I am procrastinating it more than I should be.
no just let her die naturally. my betta had dropsy too i just let him live until he couldn’t anymore
So sorry you’re dealing with this. 🙁
Blunt force is my go to for euthanasia. I have two bricks on the balcony for this purpose. We lay a piece of paper towel on one of them, put the fish on that, and then cover it with another sheet of wet paper towel to keep it from moving. And then bring down the other brick. Done it a couple of times now and it’s always equally depressing.
Im sure others will have different suggestions and methods. But whatever you choose to do, know she lived an awesome life!
Smash with a hammer or brick dont hesitate. Pithing is also fast. Sorry OP but its the garunteed method.
Ive hears two diffent things about clove oil not working for bettas but I don’t see how as its a paralytic so it would still paralyze the labryth organ. Unless there’s some real research im unconvinced it won’t work and just poor dosing. Hope somebody can post actual proof one way or another on this
I’m sorry you are going through this and that she’s not doing well. I’m relatively new to the hobby, so I don’t have any advice. It sounds like you gave her a really wonderful, happy life. Hopefully, you can take c comfort in that.
I’m so sorry for your loss and as scary and mean as it sounds I agree with the other blunt force comments. It’s the fastest and most humane way.
I’m so sorry about your beta. From what I’ve understand having to look up putting down fish myself the only real quick method seems to be hitting her, I understand your hesitation though. Maybe just let her go naturally like another comment suggested? If you feel you need to do it tonight just try to remind yourself you’re trying to shorten her suffering.
A lot of people will disagree with me on this. But clove oil, I cannot fathom blunt force I wouldnt be able to recover from it or knowing I had someone else do it.
Clove oil contains eugenol which is what most aquatic vets use for sedation. I would watch lots of videos on how to euthanize a labyrinth fish because it can be different for these guys since they can breathe air.
I followed an online vet thread on how to euthanize with clove oil. I found it the most peaceful for both me and my betta ❤️🤍
