A few months back I asked for recommendations for my Billy Pate Salmon Reel and a 4wt orvis that I came into possession of and decided to go the route of modern fiberglass because my introduction to fly fishing was an old Shakespeare. I know Moonlit is kind of an outlier company compared to some of the big names, but the price for two rods, plus backing and fly line was about all I can spend for the time being and I was able to get a pro deal to knock the cost down a bit more. For the time being, I decided to try out the line that was already on the reals to see how they cast. The Billy Pate has a really interesting setup with tippet, leader then only about 12 ft of floating fly line before getting to what looks like 100’s of yard of backing. I’m assuming this setup is for casting distance easily or maybe Spey casting (I am unfamiliar).
It’s been really fun getting used to, but presentation of lighter flies is a little tricky (assuming that’s not what the setup is for). I’m really excited to land some carp on this setup this spring, but can’t wait to try this out on some fall Bull trout.
