i have a 10 gallon currently and I have 7 x ray tetra and i was wondering if i could add one more fish. I’ve heard adding a betta or dwarf gourami would be nice but I’ve also heard that the bettas can sometimes get their fins nipped by the tetra. is it possible to add one of these fish as a centerpiece fish?

I wouldn’t recommend a centerpiece in this 10g setup with 7 tetras occupying mid column- maybe a dwarf white spotted pleco or some sort that occupies the bottom (garra or a loach) could work.
I would try to breed the tetras youhave first since you have a species only tank- sell them to lfs or local hobbyists and use that to buy new fish
