I am concerned about my betta fish but confused on what I’m doing wrong
I have a betta fish named Baja blast. He is a half moon male and he lives in a 5.5 gallon tank with live plants and rocks from our garden. The rocks I did the white vinegar test on and they didn’t bubble . I also washed the rocks with dish soap and put them in the aquarium after rinsing them thoroughly. The plants I have are rosette sword amazon sword and Java fern. The other day on (April 4th) I noticed that he had some ripped fins and I suspected either fin rot or the filter causing damage. I bought some fin rot medication recommended by a store employee and a filter intake cover. I was trying to cycle his tank fish in but I didn’t have any water test kit so all I was doing was changing the water every day to every other day ish. When I noticed what was wrong with his fins I bought a test kit and removed him from the tank. I washed the substrate and removed a plastic plant as well as a log that was leaching a ton of tannins ( more than I like in my tank) I bought a little stone lantern decoration that’s smoother than the plastic plants as well as some cholo wood I put everything back in the tank minus the one plastic plant and the big log and I added the plastic lantern decor 2 more rocks and the cholo wood which I boiled before adding to the tank than I added him and he was super happy swimming and exploring like normal this is how he’s always acted. (April 5th) When I tested the water it came back normal last night. Then this morning I gave him his medicine and I noticed he was only hanging out at the surface of the tank. I waited a bit but when I checked on him again he was still there it’s been a couple hours and this is super abnormal for him. I tested the water again and the PH was a bit high but everything else was fine. The thermometer was reading 76 degrees. he has some light spots but I didn’t think it was anything abnormal he is not reacting much to me tapping on the table or anything he usually reacts. I did a gallon.5 water change but I don’t know what else I can do for him. I’ve put a lot of time and effort into keeping him healthy and trying to cycle the tank I’ve also spent lots of money and I don’t know why all of a sudden when I’m doing things right it all goes wrong. ): I love my fish please help. Also he was doing fine in a unicycled 1 gallon!

Ok so what you need is prime and stability these two products are going to allow you do safely cycle your tank with a fish in the tank . All u need to do is watch YouTube kaveman aquatics and search fish n cycle with prime and stability. Now for his fin rot this is probably from the water parameters not being very good . That’s why prime is a life save because it binds ammonia , nitrites and nitrates completely for 48 hours keeping them safe from the issues it causes giving u time to fix it. And if you want to treat the fin rot all you have to do is use prime and stability and water changes daily bump his heat up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and add some catappa leafs and api stress coat plus or stress guard I personally prefer api stress coat plus !
