Starting to get back into trout fishing and noticed the top eyelet to my 20 year old ugly stick doesn't match the others on the rod. All the other ones seem to have a plastic insert on the metal, this one is just bare metal. I don't have another rod the same age to compare it to. If this thing is missing the plastic component should I cut it off and use a rod tip kit? Thanks

You can buy the eyelet inserts and repair kits on Amazon. Ceramic available I didn’t search for plastic. Better to keep tip intact I believe, but others could correct me.
Yes. Replace the rod tip. They’ll fray your line in no time. You may have luck cutting around the bottom of the rod tip with a razor knife to get just the epoxy and then twisting the rod tip off with a bit of heat. Two part epoxy for the new rod tip and away you go. That’s the cheap and fast method I use.
Yes you’ll need a replacement tip but don’t cut it off.
Heat it up and the old tip should pull off. 👍
Ugly Stiks do not have inserts. It is a solid stainless steel guide. But, that one appears to be torn up, so definitely replace it. Fuji rod tip repair kits are fairly cheap, and come with few sizes of tips in them.
