Looking to get a tandem fishing kayak to take my 12-year-old out with me. I’m not trying to get super hardcore into kayak fishing, just something stable and fun where we can fish together on lakes and calm water.
Ideally thinking something with pedals front and back so he can actually help out instead of me doing all the work… plus I figure he’ll enjoy it more if he’s involved.
I came across the FeelFree Lure II Tandem and it seems pretty solid. From what I can tell it’s really stable, has good seating, and can be set up with pedal drive (at least in the rear). Looks like it’s more built for comfort and fishing vs speed, which is probably fine for what I’m doing.
My questions:
• Anyone here running a tandem with a kid around that age?
• Is pedal drive worth it for tandem setups or overkill for casual use?
• Do you regret going tandem vs just getting two singles?
• Any better options I should be looking at in that \~$1,500–$2,500 range?
Appreciate any advice… just trying to make some good memories and not buy the wrong boat.

Tandem kayaks are never worth it better to get him one that fits him and take two separate ones
I have a Feel Free single 13.5. I believe that’s almost the same profile as the tandem. I love it, love the seat. Not a pedal drive but I think there’s a unit that is a stock drop in. If you have the option of it being a single that matches the 13.5 I’d say do it. It is not a fast boat but is very stable. It is a VERY heavy yak coming in at almost 100#
