Here are some photos from Nov 2025 to today (first 2 are from Nov). I’m worried he has fit rot as I’m noticing his fins are way more jagged and not as full. I’m so confused because I change his water 25%-50% once a week. I test his water often and everything comes back normal, he has a heater and a filter and live plants. I also recently in the last few weeks have been adding tannins to his tank. The only issue I’ve had is lots of algae in the tank, but I’ve been managing it. I don’t know how he could have fin rot, as I think I’m doing everything right? Please help! Is this fin rot and if it is what do I do to help him?

  1. I’m no expert but it looks like he may be biting his own fins. Someone else needs to tell you why though, again I’m not an expert.

Hi there, this fish definitely has fin rot, it’s not biting. Fin rot is 9/10 times due to water quality issues – are you able to share the water parameters for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH?

Additionally, the tank details (size, age, water change schedule, tank mates, maintenance etc.)?

As much info as possible, answering the mod questions will guide toward what info needed, or even just what I’ve requested here will help.

If we can identify the issue from the missing information being provided, we can help guide you to getting him healthy again.

    Thanks.

Edit, have seen the weekly water change schedule, what type of water do you use for this and how is it conditioned?

  3. Looks more like his fins have been torn? They don’t look as mushy as rotted fins typically look…it’s possible he’s been squeezing through the small holes in that decor block in the background. Not sure if that black box is a heater or filter? But if it is a filter with slatted intake he might be getting fins sucked into it and they are tearing that way

Also, I agree with the other comment that he might have Popeye, the eye area does look swollen. The color of the eyes could be genetic though (diamond eye)
