Last October I was working insane hours and to give myself a morale boost I impulse-bought a (relatively) inexpensive inflatable pedal kayak. I already had another inflatable kayak, a paddle kayak that I usually used to troll for Kokanee using a trolling motor, works great, but I have long been interested in trying out a pedal kayak. I live in a condo-type situation, my garage barely fits my car and a workbench, and I drive a compact vehicle, so inflatables are where it's at for me.

I took the new kayak out once shortly after I bought it to make sure everything works, but since then I hadn't had the opportunity to get it out (PNW U.S. weather coupled with work). But I did have usually Friday nights, a computer, and a 3D printer so I designed and printed up a number of accessories to flesh out my pedal kayak for Kokanee trolling. For me, this means two rods deployed, a downrigger, and fish-finder/transducer. I made extended rod bases to make the most of the very short kayak track that came with the kayak, a downrigger mount that attaches to the strapped-in beach chair, the Tactical Fish Landing Net Funnel 3000 so I could re-sheath my net behind my chair into the rod sleeves while continuing to pedal, "rocket launchers" that attach to the downrigger mount for rod storage, TPU feet for my strapped-in beach chair so it didn't slide all around which was the biggest issue. Also made my own boom base/mount, folding camera boom with Temu nav lights, a folding flag/light pole with rechargeable Temu lantern (kind of an unabashed copy of the Yak Attack carbon version I use on my other kayak, but doesn't go through 18$ replacement LED like no tomorrow).

Today was the first real fishing trip, I was trying for Kokanee. The Kokanee didn't seem to be biting but I landed a number of nice rainbow trout. The boat tracked well with the downrigger deployed, which I was actually surprised about given the flat bottom and small skegs (weather was exceptionally calm though, so we shall see in the future if I need to figure out a bigger "keel" solution). El-Cheapo Drive worked great, some annoying creaking but it's not from the drive but from the drive cradle, which I hopefully can sort out. A number of niggling issues and ergonomics to deal with, that happens when you buy cheap, but I think I can come up with solutions.

  1. Really impressive. I like it a lot and it has me considering going that route too based on similar storage issues.
