What do you mean you had the end backwards?
I just tie a couple overhand knots on the spool. No need to do anything fancy, once it’s full the wraps keep it tight. You may have to help it out for a few wraps at first.
Edit: Holy moly how did it take you an hour to put line on?? Are you wrapping it by hand or something?

Put it through eyelets. Put it through bail as normal. Tie knot. Get a towel or even your sleeve, and cause tension on the line between first eyelet and reel. Reel it in, keeping tension. You can go fast as heck as long as you keep tension.
Or just buy a $9 relining tool.
Some people put it in a pot with water with a lid, and line the line through the steam vent, then do the rest of the steps.
