I’m trying to tie up stuff for summer steelhead and saw this.
I was on the Clearwater in Idaho in Feb and the guide said “try this, it caught two yesterday”. I put it on and had a steelhead chase it in an hour even though never hooked up.
I don’t know what this horrible fly is, but the fish don’t care. If you put it in their face, they will at least check it out.

I think there’s a tendency for flies to be too geared towards our eye rather than the fish. I’m not great at tying by any means and I buy the flies I don’t want to do, but I do some subsurface soft hackle patterns that are super simple and perfect for a lot of emerger or cripple dry situations that I come across mostly with cutties in my case.
