Navigating back upstream can be challenging with a paddle or peddles. I try to find the lower current areas of the river to make the accent easier. Sometimes there are back eddies or sheltered stretches that form on the edges, so I normally stick to the sides when making my way back upstream. But rivers also tend to have a predictable flow around river bends, where the current will flow faster around the outer edge, so it sometimes helps to cross the river before reaching the next bend to stay on the inner bends.
