FLORENCE, Ala. — Peyton Sorrow had an ambitious objective, but exceeding that plan with a Day 1 limit of 19 pounds, 6 ounces put the recent University of Montevallo graduate atop the Day 1 leaderboard for the Bassmaster College Classic Cup presented by Lew’s at Wilson Lake.

Sorrow, who’s currently working on his MBA at the University of West Alabama, heads into Day 2 with a 2-pound, 8-ounce lead over fellow Montevallo angler Brody Robison, who partnered with Sorrow to notch a wire-to-wire win in the Strike King Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops, Aug. 20-22 at Minnesota’s Leech Lake.

“My goal weight today was 18 pounds and I was able to have that early this morning,” said Sorrow, who had boxed a limit of about 16 by 7:45. “So that gave me a lot of confidence to look around for some more fish for the remainder of the tournament.”

Sorrow’s day started with a bang when a 4-7 smallmouth was the first to enter his livewell.

“That kinda set the tone for how today was gonna go,” Sorrow said. “I did have some missed opportunities on some that were much larger than that, but I can’t complain. With the bag I had, it was a fantastic start.

“I went to a place where I caught a couple and shook a couple big ones off (in practice). I caught that big smallmouth within the first five minutes of being there. It was on-script for what I was thinking.”

With two more days of competition ahead, Sorrow kept his details thin, but he said he focused on a 3-mile area he identified in practice. Rotating among several smaller spots within the general location, Sorrow focused on finding the obvious feeding areas.

“The spots had to have baitfish,” Sorrow said. “Depth didn’t really matter, the bank details didn’t matter; it just had to have baitfish.”

Sorrow reported catching all of his fish on one finesse bait. Success, he said, required very precise presentations.

Timing was also important and Sorrow believes he may have missed some of the key periods.

“Every day, the current has been ramping up an hour earlier, so I think that’s causing the fish and bait to move around more and become extremely nomadic,” he said. “A lot of the time windows when I knew fish were going to be in my areas were off a little bit.

“I’m almost wondering if maybe the fish were there, but they might have been there an hour earlier today. So I’m gonna keep that in mind going into tomorrow and the remainder of the tournament.”

Sorrow said he’s optimistic that he can return to his area and, hopefully, nab some of the quality bass that gave him the slip today.

“I did think I was going to leave there with more weight than what I caught today, but those fish had other plans and decided to go somewhere else,” he said. “So we’re going to spend tomorrow trying to relocate those fish because they’re the biggest ones by far that I saw throughout all of practice.

“A lot of my places from practice weren’t nearly as good as I thought they were going to be, but I was able to turn the day into another practice day and find some more fish after I’d caught a good bag.”

With Hurricane Isaias predicted to make landfall somewhere along the Eastern Alabama to Western Florida Panhandle coast tonight or early Saturday morning, Sorrow said he’ll likely need to upsize his finesse bait to account for more wind and dimmer conditions.

“Sometimes (weather) moves in and makes them go nuts and everyone catches 20 pounds, or it could be tough and everyone catches 10,” Sorrow said. “The most important thing will be keeping an open mind and taking all the signs you can get and letting those fish tell you where they are.”

Robison is in second place with 16-14. He said he’s eager to seeing what Wilson can produce over the next two days.

“A three-day shootout is all about consistency,” Robison said. “I’m looking forward to getting back out there because I think there’s the potential for a monster bag.”

Logan Fisher of Emmanuel University is in third place with 15-11. After enduring four hours without a bass in his boat, Fisher got on a good stretch from practice and quickly sacked up a solid limit.

Fisher holds the Big Bass lead with a 4-9.

Sorrow joins six other Bassmaster College Series standouts in a seven-angler field competing for a spot in the 2027 Bassmaster Classic presented by Under Armour, March 19-21 at Lake Hartwell.

Furthermore, the top prize package includes a Toyota Tundra and a fully-rigged Nitro Boat professionally wrapped in the winner’s school logo and colors for use at eligible 2027 events. Additionally, the winner will receive $7,500 in cash and paid entry into one Turtlebox Bassmaster Opens presented by Battery Tender division of the winner’s choice.

Saturday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. CT at Waterfront Marina & Dry Storage. The weigh-in will be held at the Hilda B Anderson Softball Stadium at 3:15 p.m.
