A Lake Superior angler has set a new state record.

Minnesota Fish and Wildlife officials confirmed the record catch was made by Ryan Pierce of Bloomington in August. The 33-inch rainbow trout (steelhead) was verified as the new state catch-and-release record on Monday.

“This steelhead has snatched the crown,” officials said in a statement. “Congratulations Ryan and we hope you’re “hooked” on fishing in Minnesota.”

The fish broke the previous Minnesota record set by 12-year-old Sadie Spatafore of Maple Grove, who reeled in the 30-inch steelhead from the Stewart River in Lake County in May. That fish broke her older sister’s record by 1.5 inches.

Minnesota Sportfishing, a charter company, said the fish was caught on a 10 color leadcore line with a standard Moonshine Lures RV bloody nose spoon.

“This is one that we won’t soon forget,” the company said on Facebook.

Trout can be found throughout Minnesota, but Lake Superior and the pristine lakes near the Canadian border are the state’s primary destination for lake trout fishing. Streams along the North Shore are renowned for their steelhead and brook trout.
