I'm considering doing some surf fishing, was gifted a conventional reel and a 12 foot rod by a neighbor who was moving out. My main concern is whether or not my reel holds enough line for the fish we have here in South Florida off the coast. And if so what bait should I use? Also what sized circle hook and what pound line?

Not with that real
Reel
Nice. Go to a local tackle shop. They’ll set you up.

This is what I use the 6500 model
So at the absolute most basic level, if that reel functions correctly, and assuming you know how to cast with it, you could use that rig to catch small surf fish in close like pompano or something like that. Put some 12lb mono on it, and get some like size 1 circle hooks and weights, hi-lo rigs, and bait with fishbites and cut shrimp or sand fleas.
But, so know what you’re actually working with before you go through the effort, that’s an extremely cheap – like $5 Temu cheap – freshwater casting reel on an also really cheap upside down spinning rod. It’s mismatched and very low quality. I would expect that the best case scenario is a frustrating experience for a short time until you either get sick of it, or saltwater permanently damages the reel. If you don’t know how to use a casting reel, that’s gonna be a rough one to learn on.
It’s up to you if you want to give it a shot. Line and rigs are cheap, but you’re definitely not doing yourself any favors in getting off to a strong start with that setup. Doesn’t mean you can’t catch something on it though.
Dawai BG4000 with 30lb brain and whatever lb mono/flouro leader you connect to it. You will not be disappointed!
