Hi All! I have this Tsunamu Rigged/Ready rod that I bought at a reputable shop in Outer Banks. It’s a cool rod but at 8’, I don’t know if I am able to cast far out enough. I’ve been thinking of keeping the reel but maybe get a longer, collapsing rod. I wanted to ask what some of y’all think about that. Transport is an issue as I can’t really put a longer rod inside my van.

This may be a cliché, but it’s not always size that matters😉😂 but in all seriousness my 2-piece 7 foot ugly stik, catches keeper size striped bass and bluefish all the time off of Long Island. With a shorter rod, you just have to learn how to work the rod as you fight the fish.
But there are some really good two-piece options out there that will give you the proper 10 to 11 foot length for the surf while also breaking down into a manageable size for transport. I’ve personally been looking at the 11’ two piece Penn Prevail as my second Surf Rod. I’m just unsure about durability and reliability.
Use this for starters and see how it goes. With the proper weight and braided line, you should be able to get a very decent casting distance. Once you know if and what the shortfalls of this combo are, build your own combo to fit your specific needs.
I have a few 9 and 10 foot super cheap rods from Walmart that I’ve had a few years that I’m happy with if you want more one day I’d recommend those.
In OBX sometimes the fish are at your feet, so that rod can work. Definitely a good size for plugging all day
Sometimes they’re not.
I mostly fish NJ, and a 10 foot is a good sized rod. You can fish bait, and throw bigger metal and plugs.
Back bay stuff sure
Put 20# braid on it and get some lures or weights from 3/4 to 2 Oz and go fish.
2 pc 10′ rod will uplevel your game, 12′ may take some working up to. 12′ will give you reach but you need to cast well, always. It sounds silly but just watch the pro’s, the timers, the OGs on the beach. They get distance without mussel.
