I have a penn 710 greenie that has a 3.6:1 gear ratio. I tried to use a pencil popper (1.5 oz) and struggled to reel in the slack fast enough as the waves pushed my lure to shore. Making it very difficult to work the action.

I hear a lot of praise about these old penns and they seem to be used even today for surf. I would like to experiment and see what is possible with it besides chucking bait.

Does anyone use these reels with top water lures? Is there a technique that works for pencil poppers with slower reels?

Current set-up:
Reel: Penn 710, 3.6:1, #20 fireline
rod: Tsunami airwave elite, 8'8", .5-2oz lure

Thank you
