I was supposed to go on my first guided fly fishing trip on a blue ribbon river, but that got canceled due to fires. I was pretty bummed, but decided to turn lemons into lemonade by trying to fish the gross river close to home in my pool toy of a raft instead. I caught my first ever fish on a floating popper, so that was kinda fun. This pikeminnow and few smallmouth were my consolation. I’m still sad about the canceled trip, but at least I got to put some fish in a net still.

I traveled a thousand miles for a gathering once and had a blast catching those on dry flies.
Not a bad consolation prize.
Good on ya dialing in a bite on your own.
Hey just went for smallmouth and pike minnow last weekend and had a blast. Pike minnow are slept on for sky fishing, great surface action, and smallies are always fun. As long as it’s a fish it’s fun to catch.
I caught one of these one time in a shallow lily pad type area. It just almost immediately swam into a thick section of weeds and played dead. Luckily the area I was fishing was somewhat shallow so I could wade over with my net and scoop it out of the pads, but the fucker absolutely would not move it was so weird. I just sat there with a completely slack line for like 2 minutes hoping he would swim off or get himself loose but he never did so I had to go scoop him.
Once I retrieved him from the weeds he was totally fine and swam away strong as hell. Just never seen a fish play dead like that before it was very odd.
