I've noticed that the hair rig braided line floats off the bottom a good 6-7 inches. Is that normal? Do I need to add any weight? I've been trying to target the grass carp in my uncles pond. I also tried some green apple boilies but no luck either. They seem to feed on the pack bait but I can't get them to take the hair rig. To be honest I might have had a couple bites but I couldn't tell. I understand grass carp are picky. I've tried floating bread but have not had alot of luck.(lots of turtles & bluegill will take it) just want to make sure this setup looks okay. Thanks

First off. Add an egg sinker above the method feeder.. it should freely move up and down the line. Second off the length of line between the hook and the feeder is far too long. Shorten it to about 4 inches. Those would be my first complaints.
As mentioned your hook length is too long imo.
Shorten the rig size for sure, you want 2-4 inches. If the line still floats then add some tungsten putty
Some will call this a “death rig”. The problem with this style of feeder is that if you get a line break, the fish is stuck with all that hanging from its lip and easily snagged on something….
There are a couple of solutions. Amazon sells a spring-type feeder where the line simply goes through a tube down the center.
You can arrange these so that in case of a line break, the whole thing just falls off.
“Tom”, of “Outside with Tom” (YouTube channel) makes up combination feeder/weights that accomplish the same thing, and are not prone to tangling. (I’ve been using them all this season)
I also modified some of the pictured feeders to accomplish the same thing. Cut the wire that runs through the center and throw away. Now… Drill a hole through each of those green beads, sufficient to take one of those small “coffee stirrer” straws you get at the gas station. Glue the straw to the green beads so you now have a tube running through the center of your feeder….
Finally…. IMO…. Your hair rig is much too long. The idea is to keep your hook-bait in close proximity to the “pack bait” on your feeder, so that the carp will find it as they’re eating your pack bait.
From my experience the shorter the hook line the less likely to get tangled in the feeder.
Okay ill give these things a try. I will add a small sliding egg sinker and then shorten the hair rig length. Thanks fellas.
I’ll give you a simple fix and disregard all the other nonsense…
1) Shorten the length of the rig to about 4 to 6 in.
2) Remove the stupid spring feeder and just use a sliding egg sinker or no-roll
then mold your method mix right around the sinker.
Death rig. The feeder can’t come free in the event of the mainline breaking, so a fish will be left trailing the feeder which is much more likely to get tethered than a just a couple of feet of line. Get one of the in-line ones that the line threads through the middle of and attaches to a swivel instead, and use a shorter hooklength.
No
Agreed death rig.. but with a few tweaks could easy be safe and effective… well done OP for seeking better knowledge
Hair should be max 5 inches IMO for a method feeder, preferably 4 or even 3 inches. Hook should be packed into the bait on the feeder, not floating around a hooklength away, and when the feeder bait has broken down the hook should still be there sitting in that pile.
If the main line is stronger than the leader then I think it’s fine.
Put the hook free in the line and cast with the bait weight, this way you avoid leaving a fish carrying a feeder forever.
Not safe at all, poor carp 😢
It is not a method feeder, I would not use it this way, since the spiral is tight to the main line and can’t slide off in case your line breaks.
