Hello, I want to get a new spinning rod for inshore, mostly from piers, jetties, docks, etc. I might try some surf fishing but I probably would rather keep it shorter to be more versatile. This is in South Florida so think jacks, snook, tarpon, sheepshead, redfish.

I have 2 setups currently, a medium ugly stik 6'6, and a little ultralight bfs combo. This rod will be paired with a daiwa saltist 4000 which I already own.

I looked at some star rods, st croix, and fenwick in my price range at bass pro and I think I want to go with a Fenwick HMG. But I can't decide between medium or medium heavy. The medium is rated for 1/8 – 1oz lures, the medium heavy is 1/2- 1 1/2 oz. I feel like I should get the MH since my current M can already throw 1/8-5/8, so the MH would open up more bait options. I'm just a little apprehensive because I've never really thrown lures over 3/8th.

Its probably a silly question but would I be okay throwing stuff like jigs with soft plastics and jerkbaits on a MH 1/2 – 1 1/2 oz rod? I mostly like to throw a bait with 1 rod and play with a lure on another, so depending on the spot I might use this new inshore rod for either chucking the baits or working artificials depending on where I want to put the bait/how heavy the bait is.

Thanks for any tips you have, I'm also not 100% unswayable on the fenwick HMGs, its just what i liked the feel of in store, I'm open to other rods around $180ish or less.

  1. For a 4000 sized reel I’d definitely go with MH but it also depends what type of fish you’re targeting.
