Only thing I can see is not being able to keep tension on the line spool while you’re reeling it off can make for trouble loose like that

I used to do this but now after seeing someone else mention it I use a jar or pot filled with water, throw the spool in the water, and reel. It seems to produce just enough tension, wets the line so it dries tight, and keeps the line spinning more freely.
