Picked up a scoop of crappie minnows and quite of few have this weird tail thing, like it’s rotting away? They’re still alive until they can’t swim. Any ideas?

  1. He’s been swimming for his life for a long time….minnows get beat up in transport and storage at the bait shop

  2. Probably some disease like fin rot, either in the bait shops’ tanks, or more likely from their supplier. They’re not kept in ideal conditions since they’re disposable bait. They’ll still catch fish and may be more enticing if you’re just dead sticking them since no tail fins mimics an injured bait and easy meal. Unless you’re planning on keeping them for a fairly long time, I wouldn’t worry about it, too much

  3. Well they are fat head minnows. I don’t know the particular disease, but it looks like it might be a fungal infection due to injury to the tail. Look at it as an easier snack for the crappie you are trying to catch. Those fish will have to struggle harder to get away and might trigger more bites.
