Is this cut under its gill spawning colors or is this a CutBow?
Truckee River, CA. I have been catching all these typical looking Rainbows in the river and they ALL have this very very slight cut under their gills.
Is this a CutBow or spawning colors?

No but there are probably some distant cutthroat genetics, I’ve found wild rainbow trout in Appalachia (no cutthroats whatsoever) that have a faint red slash under the jaw. Probably genes from mixing with cutthroat way way back, but I wouldn’t really consider it a cutbow

A lot of Redbands have the cutthroat slash but no actual cutthroat genetics

in my opinion, a true cutbow should have distinct rainbow AND cutthroat markings. although technically this is likely a hybrid of the two
