Hi there. I have a newly set up 10-gallon tank, cycled for 3 weeks with plants in but no fish.
Yesterday I purchased a new plant in a shell along with my first fish, a small butterfly betta. Well, last night I discovered that a stowaway came home with the plant!! Google lens tells me that it is a yo-yo loach which can grow to be 7+ inches.
The betta (I think his name will be Vaughan) is curious about the loach and swims near and around him/her, and the loach just seems to ignore the betta.
My question is, since the loach will get pretty big, and this tank is only 10 gallons, would it be a good idea to take this loach back to the pet store or should I just keep him/her? I do have a plan to set up a 29 gallon tank that I already own in the future; however, that may be 6 months from now. How fast will the yo-yo loach grow?

I’ve had my yo yo loach for 6-8 months and the growth rate is pretty slow but I’m not sure if it varies for each fish. Mine is probably 3 inches after all this time so I wouldn’t worry too much about it growing that fast. Mine eats a lot too and is still pretty small
I have a 36 and a few yoyos. They have great personality and are quite entertaining. They don’t bother my smaller fish.
So yoyos are a complete 50/50 some are ayssholes for no reason some are super chill .. they can nip A LOT so just keep an eye on it make sure it’s not nipping the beta tail .. they tend to do better in groups and the gravel you have will eventually cause damage to his stomach as they are always flying around the bottom of the tank full speed .. it’s not the worst thing to keep him and they do grow really really slow so if you upgrade in a few months you’ll be ok .. the more immediate issue is that sharp gravel
Why getting a freebie like this never happened to me 😩
