Hello all I am flying to Aruba on Thursday and I am bringing a rod, reel and a few fly boxes with me in my carry on bag. I was wondering if anyone has had experience flying with a nail knot tool like the one pictured below. I don’t want to get it confiscated going through security and not have anyway to switch leaders. It will also be in a seperate box with a bunch of tippet and leader. Thank you all in advance!

  1. You should have no problem. I have flown with every fishing piece of equipment minus a full knife with no issue in my carry-on. Really really big loose saltwater hooks could be a problem.

  2. I think it can be very agent specific as to what they will question. I do think there are baselines for “tools” with sizes but I personally feel like you will be fine. If they ask, just say “it’s for tying fishing lines together” and see how it goes.

Honestly, it kind of just looks like a bottle opener so they might not even question it.

For reference, I flew into and out of Hawaii with huge plugs/poppers, big saltwater hooks, small pliers, and small scissors – no one batted an eye. I took the hooks off in case they wanted to confiscate them.

My mindset on flying with fishing stuff is to be willing to lose it if the agent isn’t happy with it.

Alternatively, you can learn to tie nail knots with a plastic straw.
