I got my betta July 2nd and recently it looks like he’s shedding like a reptile does and I’m not sure how to go about it. I’ll be honest, lately I’ve been struggling on how to clean his tank. There’s a lot of debre and I can’t figure out how to clean it. I have a siphon and net and I clean it every three weeks but still. My plants are dying and I’ve tried 3 root tabs monthly and 10 drops of fertilizer weekly. The heater removes a lot of water so every week and a half I have to re add water inside with conditioner. It’s just a whole lot for a first time fish owner and I’m not sure what to do. Kimchi has been having this shed stuff for a week, he has a bubble almost like a pimple on the bottom of his face (not very visible) and now there’s white stuff peeling off. He doesn’t want to eat much and had a day of fasting (he’s eating now) but he also swims a bit slowly? I find him at the bottom of the tank on the seabed or on top of leaves. My filter has one setting but I usually keep water to the top so that not much power comes out. Atp I’m thinking of just tossing all my plants and getting new ones to start again. I have two anubis, one Java fern, and an Amazon sword plant. The Amazon used to be HUGE but then its leaves started disintegrating and it honestly took up 2/3 of the tank.

If I did restart my plants what would you guys recommend? Maybe some ground dwelling plants or something thay would grow out so much like the Amazon. Perhaps some corks too, I have almond leaves but I don’t know if they do anything besides make the tank darker (blocks the light). I’d like siphoning to be easier but whenever I do it, it feels like I’m removing a lot of water from the tank and I get worried about my parameters. Ammonia levels have been good though. I keep my light on for 4-6 hours
He is definitely ill, now the question is, is it genetic, fungal, parasitic, bacterial, etc.
I haven’t seen something like this before, and it’s hard to determine the cause without knowing the water parameters.
If you could please respond to the mods questions we would probably be able to help you better 🙂 <3
Would love to know as my boy is looking exactly the same, one side of his face looks swollen today and he’s starting to pine cone on that side too near his gill. Sorry no advice but just thought I’d share as similar situation!

What’s your water parameters in numbers?
unfortunately, cleaning every 3 weeks is way too little. its recommended to do a 25% water change minimum once a week while cleaning the debris in the tank, this will help you keep on top of any gunk that starts to form. knowing your parameters will help a ton in identifying whats happening. to me personally it looks like a bit of a fungal infection, and like hes been banging his head on the glass possibly, i remember seeing something similar awhile ago on another forum. also, restarting your plants really wont do anything if you dont get to the root of the issue, youll just be adding more plants that will melt if you dont know what caused it in the first place. again, knowing parameters will help identify this

If i may my fish had the same kind of small point appearing. It kept growing I tried many different treatment until I learned it was an actual tumor. It look really similar in your case the best I could do is preventing it from bursting and leave an open wound. She lived 1 and a half year after the first symptom.
