I normally use a few wraps of mono with an arbor knot before spooling with braid but a few of my larger reels have what look like little cleats on their spools. Is it safe to just tie braid directly to these using something like a uni knot?
Also the last photos are of a Fathom 30LD2 which has a recessed hole drilled through the spool. Any idea what this is for ??

I have used those to secure my knot to the spool. I tie a knot around the spool and incorporate those points into the knot to keep line from slipping. Never had any issues.
