Just got into fly tying. I have the Orvis encounter tying kit and wanted to tie up some disco midges. Materials didn’t match exact fly recipes but seemed close enough.
The ones on the left are tied on curved nymph hooks I ordered online but I really wanted to tie smaller ones. The ones on the right were the only really small/midge sized hooks I had but they were on a straight shanked dry fly hook.
I bent the hooks while they were in the vice to make a more realistic shaped hook. Is that going to compromise the strength of the hook? Is it more likely break during a fight now? If it’s cool how’s the bend? Too severe to set the hook? Last question…. I left one hook straight, you think it’ll still catch trout or is it too unrealistic now?
