Taking my dad out this weekend. Looking for walleye and possibly some crappie, I have been fishing near and around the x most winter but wanna try and find a better spot since he hasn’t been out yet. I’m limiting us to this bay so he doesn’t have to walk a ton. Any suggestions? (I have only caught walleye and pike near the x, no crappie)

  1. Around here I tend to find crappies over the flats next to drop offs. I know our maps here are so far off from reality of what’s under us it’s harder to pin point the locations. They can be suspended off bottom so a fish finder will help a lot. If you don’t have one try and set bait 4 foot or more off bottom. Marked a few spots here for reference.

Heavy drop offs in the morning, flats during the day. That drop off north of the X looks good, the X is also a good spot though I usually prefer deeper especially for wallies. I would highly recommend the north drop off especially for crappie as they prefer those feeding zones as well. I would dig some holes, find a depth you like for jigging for crappie, and set up shop. Set up tip ups for wallies in a little deeper than crappie water, and put your bait about 1 to 2 feet from bottom.

  3. If your just jigging grid it out and drill a lot of holes. If nothing after 5 min go to another hole. I tend to do 25 – 30 steps between hole to hole. Once you get a hot hole drill a circle of holes half that distance apart around the hot hole. If you have enough holes and get 1 or two per hole the number of fish at the end of day will be better vrs sitting at one spot and keeping your fingers crossed
