The science lab at my school has a custom built aquarium, but for some reason, there is a pole running through it. No one knows what it's for or why it's there. Any insights?
In the picture I posted there is some stuff left over from when there was a hamster in here. The pole is on the right side of the tank.

That’s for the female creatures with daddy issues/drug problems.
It’s for the Spanish Dancer.
The poor hamster was probably just trying to pay some bills. Who are you to judge?
The lid looks heavy; being that it’s in a science class it could be to provide support so that it can also be used as a shelf, or even a strong enough lid to prevent a pet Houdini from climbing out and not compromise the tank with excess weight?
There was probably a decoration that needed a firm and unmovable support which would attach to the pole in a similar manner to the glass ware in the class room.
Or if the inside of the pole is accessible from the top, then it’s a mounting post to put non-hamster objects into.
im going to take a guess and say the pole was meant to hang things off of, such as a water bottle for the hamster.
i would take caution in using it as a fish tank and make sure it was built to withstand the water pressure and weight. tanks built for terrariums and tanks built for fish have different requirements, so you cant assume that itd work immediately as a fish tank if it was built for a hamster.
Are you sure it was a custom aquarium and not a standard piece of lab equipment like a fume cupboard?
Is the bottom integral or something that was added later? I’m wondering if the tank was originally plumbed for a sump and they just starter working around it.
Okay, so how confident are you that this was originally used for fish or animals.
My science teacher in high school modified a used aquarium in a similar way. He would fill the tank with water and then metal shards. Then after things settled he’d put a current through the metal pole to demonstrate the magnetic field.
He would also use the same tank to demonstrate that pure H2O wasn’t conductive.
