Hi all. Before I get started, I know I’ve made mistakes and would appreciate constructive criticism rather than outright derision.
I had a 5gal planted tank with my betta and 6 shrimp with some ramshorns. I noticed my betta was having issues with swim Bladder and sure enough my nitrates were awfully high (80ppm!!!). I did pwcs for about a week. (Params using API Master Test liquid kit).
I had been eyeing this tank for awhile, and I know bigger tank can help stabilize Parameters. I basically transferred everything from the old tank to new- filter, substrate, plants. I read several sources that noted for the most part, I should be good since my bacteria were already in my sponge filter and substrate. Unfortunately, My shrimp were the canary in the coal mine and perished, so I waited to add my betta for a few days.
Well, parameters were okay-ish. I tested daily and did daily 25% water changes. I figured numbers were because my bacteria weren’t sufficient for the 10gal.
Yesterday (2 weeks post move) I tested and my ammonia had risen to 2.0ppm! I immediately performed a water change in an attempt to lower the ammonia.
I’ve been using seachem stability to jump the bacteria after the move. But I also have been treating my betta with Fritz MaracynOxy for his swim bladder issue (along with fasting him and epsom salt baths before going with Maracyn).
My guess is my cycle crashed. But any other insight from more experienced fish keepers?
