So caught my first black tip that was over 24”, and now I’m addicted to the surf. I was using a battle III 6000 combo with 40lb braid and did just fine. I now have a craving to fight sharks much bigger and wanted to see if y’all think this combo is enough to handle bigger sharks? If it isn’t, I would like to hear some recommendations on what reel/line I should look to use. Also, is shock leader necessary?

I’m in your boat now. So I’m commenting to come back.

I’m on this line of learning as I go. Nothings going to spool me because I keep the line under the reel max drag. If I break 40 lbs braid, I’m not prepared to handle taking the shark off yet. That’s how I see it

I feel like you could get away with 40 but I use 60-70. For sharks I feel like the more important thing is your leader, I use the blacktip h shark rig which is 300lb mono and then steel wire. I fish for sharks within casting distance with a similar rod and reel and catch anywhere from 6-7 ft sharks on that setup. If you’re looking for bigger, like the kind you catch from kayaking out bait then I would imagine you’d wanna upgrade but I dont have experience in that style.

I’ve landed accidental sharks up to 8 feet with a lot less gear than you currently have but if you are targeting sharks you need to heavy up and get as much line capacity as possible.. Also check regulations for where you are shark fishing because regs are all over the place with sharks..
