Bought my, new to me, kayak Friday morning. Pretty much took it straight to the harbor to get the hang of it. Hobie Mirage Outback. I didn’t catch a single fish but I also didn’t spend much time fishing. I covered every inch of the harbor just enjoying my time, learning the boat and the fish finder.

In calm water with motor running and pedaling I was able to get it up to 7mph but cruising with no peddles it does well around 4-5mph.

On Saturday I set out to another local harbor, a much bigger one, and I proceeded to cover every inch of it, once again without much fishing. Once I did start fishing I wasn’t feeling confident in the bite. I even went to the bait dock to drag some anchovies around in my tube and fish them around the breakwall. No luck. So I left to go back to the first harbor I was at the day before. Bought me some new plastics on the way.

Feeling more confident with my maneuverability and learning to kick the peddles backwards against the motor to stay in one place, I started to fish a little harder.

Thought I snagged the dock when my line pulled as I drifted back and then it violently pulled and I started reeling. I had one aggressive fish on. My rod was bent good and drag was getting pulled!

Got my first spotted bass. Caught my first fish from a kayak. Got my first kayak. Also my first fish caught in a harbor.

I am so thirsty for more!! I need partners so I can venture out past the breakers into the great wide open. I’d prefer to go with others for safety. If anyone needs partners in the L.A. to Santa Barbara area, hit me up! I have WSB to catch!
