Hey Everyone!

So I am relatively new to fishing. Up until now I have always gone into a tackle shop and had them spool line on for me as I was too scared to. Today, I decided to try and do it myself. Everything seemed to be going well until I tied on the lure and saw that it was dropping on its own when the bail was closed. Another problem I realized was that I could easily pull the line of the reel, which means that if I ever hooked a fish on it, the fish would probably run away with my lure. Now, I realize this is probably 100% my fault but I want to know if it is salvageable or if I should just take that line off and start over. Also please give me tips so that I this doesn’t happen to me again.

Just for some context, in the video the bail is closed and as you can see the lure drops on its own and I can easily pull out my line.

Thank you!

  1. Anti reverse I disengaged. When holding your rod normally there’s a switch on the bottom of the reel flip that over and should be fixed 👍

Your “free spool” switch is on. It’s usually the front bottom of the reel. Flip it the other way. You only really use it to let a fish run a bit but it allows the reel to spin both ways bypassing the drag system. I’d rather just ratchet the drag super light because using free spin can easily cause bird’s-nests if you’re not careful.
