I have the month of May off before heading to Wyoming around June 1st for the the summer. New to fly fishing (started last summer) but an experienced hiker/backpacker. I've only fished in WY and PA.

Road tripping from PA, would love to be out west so that I'm in the area. Driving distance is not really a concern and am willing to hit a few different states/areas. I know runoff this time of year is an issue.

I've been doing some research on northern NM and northern CA and both seem like potentially good options. Any other ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Colorado is great but it will need to be tailwaters most likely (as with everywhere) due to runoff. That said, everywhere is fishing pretty good still here and runoff hasn’t hit yet.

  2. Do a Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, northern CA trip. Would be so epic, but a ton of driving. Honestly you could do Colorado, Wyoming and Utah and have a blast.

May is the start of runoff in the mountain states so you will want to find good tailwaters to fish.

Unpopular opinion: May is not the greatest time for a Rocky Mountain trip. Higher elevation will still be snowy, mid to lower will be in peak runoff which a lot of people consider to be the true off season, even more so than winter. Peak runoff also looks like it’s coming a bit earlier this year (normal is June). You could still have a good time if you stick to tail waters, but this is what all the locals will be doing to. Also higher up early may some rainbows can be finishing up spawning.

New Mexico got horribly little snow this winter and are super worried about fires. I don’t exactly know how this will affect fishing but I can’t imagine it’s good for it.

I’m not an expert on other areas of the country but I would be going to somewhere around the great smokey mountains if I were you.
