Betta Fish: What to do

I am in heavy need to rescape my tank and I just ordered a bunch of new plants but I’ve been needing to get more/ deeper substrate. So should I just get more gravel? Put sand on top of the gravel/ underneath? Or just use the sand alone? OR should I use aqua soil? Any tips or opinions are greatly appreciated!
