I don't want to get rock chips on my tailgate so I'm wondering if anyone's used one of these/if one would work with the tailgate down. I will be transporting to some lakes about 7hrs away during the summer so I want to make sure everything is secure and safe.
I have an 8ft box and oldtown sportsman 120, maybe for shorter trips I could just transport with the tailgate up? I see a lot of mixed reviews on doing that, with the majority saying to transport it flat.
Thanks in advance!

Are you driving down 7 hours of logging trails?
Transport it flat, 2022 PDL 120 owner here. I’ve toted mine in my 6’5 box 1000’s of miles. You’ll be fine and your tailgate paint will be just fine as well.
Might just be me, but the bed of a truck is sacrificial. Run it.

I’ve transported every kayak I own with the tailgate up. Haven’t had any problems yet, even when travelling a few hundred miles.
Your question has already been answered, but in regards to transporting the yak with the **tailgate up**, there’s no reason you can’t do that. I do it literally every time I transport mine. Been doing it for years. The kayak didn’t explode or anything.
I suggest you do that and just avoid this ‘tailgate protection’ nonsense entirely.
