Hello!
I was excited to learn how to use a baitcaster and impulse bought a nice reel, dropped $60 on it. Put it on my favorite rod, a 1-piece 6’6” MH Ugly Stik only to learn that there are two types of rods and it actually matters…. Thankfully before breaking my rod, and I only made a couple casts to test the reel out.

But am I screwed and have to take a budget punch and get a new rod or is this okay?

It won’t cast or really work right. You need to get a casting rod..

You need a casting rod for a baitcaster. The guides on a spinning reel will make casting and landing fish very difficult.

The guide sizing and placement on a spinning rod will work against you if using a baitcaster reel.

This is a rite of passage. Ya gotta get your gear straightened out though.

  5. I got yelled at on here for doing the opposite lmaoo

I had bought a spinning reel and put it on a bait caster rod. Look into the Ozark Trail Grit Stick (there’s a spinning and bait caster version) at Walmart for like $20 if you don’t want to invest much more.

You’re screw for life. Sorry bro.

….ok, really it’s manageble for now, but plan on getting a cast rod forsure.

I have a cheap $20 zebco casting rod I got a while back, but would that be too much for that rod?

  8. Now you can have 2 set ups lol, don’t buy a cheap rod, just get a 60-100 dollar rod on sale, there’s literally sales on them year round to get them around 50 bucks

  9. Try it and find out. There are like, $9.88 Shakespeare casting rods at Walmart if you’re that worried about it. I own one, with a spincast reel my son used for a bit instead of PawPatrol or whatever. Probably get an itch later to upgrade it.
