I am lucky enough to be receiving a new net for Father’s Day, my wonderful wife would like to get me a fishpond net I have been eying for some time.

My 2 questions are

Which net should I be looking at?

And is the river armor really worth it?

I am fishing northern IL, Wisconsin, Michigan, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior waters and primarily browns, and rainbows. I do however swing a Spey rod for steelhead about 20% of the time. I also normally take 2 – 4 trips west to Colorado, PNW or south east to golf coast and fish those as well.

I wade fish 90% of the time. I know the old adage is don’t half azz 2 things, whole azz one thing but I’m looking for the best fit for jack of all trades. I’m deciding between the standard El Jefe and the new middle fork.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

I have a hand net and the mid length river armor. 9/10 I’m reaching for the mid length the reason being is I use it as wading staff and it makes it easier to net the fish solo. The hand net is much more convenient and less cumbersome to carry so if I travel that’s what’s coming with me. But I wouldn’t go after anything other than panfish, smaller bass, or trout with it as it’s not a big net.

I’ve been eyeing a Fishpond net for years. YEARS! I was going to suggest the Mid-Length from your description, the same model i’ve been considering myself.. but that new Middle Fork seems like a good option too. Sorry, i wish i had experience to share.

But i wonder what really sets the Mid-Length apart from this new Middle Fork. I’m looking forward to hearing what with firsthand experience can report.

I have a River Armor Emerger. Its great, the length helps landing fish.
